The spiral is one of humanity’s most timeless and universal symbols — a mysterious generative form that governs both nature and the cosmos. It appears everywhere: in the golden growth of DNA, the unfurling of a fern, the turning of galaxies, and the rotation of ocean waves. At once mathematical and poetic, the spiral bridges science, art, and philosophy.
In this special practical course, we will explore the geometry, symbolism, and construction of spiral forms through a series of guided drawings, models, and visual presentations. Working step by step, we’ll uncover the structural principles that allow spirals to grow, expand, and transform across different contexts — from architecture to natural pattern.
What We’ll Explore
Across the four sessions, we will draw and construct a range of historic and geometric spiral systems, including:
- The Ionic volute — classical architectural spiral construction
- Projected conical spirals used in ornamental design
- The Spiral of Theodorus
- Archimedean spirals
- Logarithmic spirals found in nature and cosmic growth
Alongside these drawings, we’ll create simple yet striking three-dimensional models to better understand how spirals occupy space and generate form.
What You’ll Gain
- Practical construction methods for multiple spiral types
- Insight into the relationship between geometry and growth
- Architectural and ornamental applications
- Finished drawings and study models
- Lifetime access to session recordings
All abilities are welcome — from beginners to experienced artists, designers, and makers — with each session building progressively on the last.
“We are not moving in circles, we are on a spiral journey upwards.”
