Drawing from the Past: Working with Medieval Manuals of Geometry.

This presentation will be taught by Katya Nosyreva PhD and facilitated by Adam Williamson.

Historical references on the construction of Islamic geometric patterns are rare, but what we do have offers fascinating glimpses of practical methods, thought processes, and the world-view of medieval Islamic craftsmen.
In this special two-part introduction we will explore two rare and remarkable documents dealing with geometric modes of construction:

A Book on Those Geometric Constructions Which Are Necessary for a Craftsman, written by the tenth century mathematician and astronomer Abū al-Wafā’ Būzjānī (940-998) and an anonymous Persian compendium entitled On Similar and Complementary Interlocking Figures, a practical manual on geometry, appended to a Persian translation of al-Būzjānī’s text.

We will work through a series of constructions from these documents. Evolving from theoretical principles of Euclidean geometry, some of the diagrams can be traced to architectural scrolls and ornamental architectural solutions. These exercises will provide us with some understanding of the early roots of the incredibly complex vocabulary of the Islamic geometric patterns and their relationship to such disciplines as surveying and arithmetic.
We will explore how questions of practical/applied geometry were discussed by mathematicians and practitioners of various crafts, and how the practice of drawing geometric designs constituted a tradition of recoding and transmitting architectural knowledge. The diagrams in these documents visually evoke concepts of beauty and order rooted in the harmony of proportionally interrelated figures and, in part, explain the timeless fascination that geometry holds for contemporary artists and practitioners.

Upcoming online presentations taught by @adamwilliamsonart inspired by his studies with Norhaiza Noordin and research in Malaysia, China and Indonesia.

We will study patterns from the The Forbidden City in Beijing, China. From Kelantan, Malaysia and Jepara, Java. Many Islamic styles in the Middle East have been inspired by Chinese art forms and then returned to Southeast Asia in a confluence of styles resulting in sublime syncretic masterpieces.

Image from Ceiling panel pulpit, Surau Laggar, Kelantan, 1874, cegal wood. Spirit of Wood: The Art of Malay Woodcarving: Noor,Farish, Khoo, Eddin, Lok, David:

We will look at the inherent symbolism within these patterns including the gateway (pintu gerbang) which represents a human body and popular compositions such as the awan larat (meandering clouds), buah buton (stupa) and gunungan (mountan peaks) are seen as representations of the unending spiral of life, power and unity.

Many of these motifs have long journeys from Hindu-Buddhist roots flowering in more vegetive forms with advent of arrival of Islam such as the daun dewa (deity leaf) or daun Langkasuka

The tree has sent down its roots, sent up its trunk, and spread out its branches, so that this world, the world is Symbols, and the world of Archetypes, are all contained by this tree. It’s the symbol of wisdom which, through roots in meditation, bears fruit of the spirit.

In a series of online biomorphic classes this winter we will gaze upon and explore The tree of life

Even in the empty hidden archive down in the crypt we are elevated 💫 We spent last week lost in architectural and pattern folios at The Courtauld Institute of Art, Somerset House on the Strand. Thanks to Head of Digital Media, Tom Bilsond for leaving a window open for us to access these resources, many of the images are from over a century old and not been seen before, they record buildings in places like Mosel that have been destroyed or damaged.

Pictures by T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) and Byron (not that one). Only a handful of people have see these images, there are 1 million architectural images and it's estimated to take a 100 years to catalogue them so we have been recording relevant images and adding them to our online travel/monument archive on our website.

This is one of the first patterns you encounter when you enter the Alhambra Palace, its synonymous with the architecture of Nasrids Spain.

Mexuar is derived from the Arabic term Maswar, the place where the Surah or Counsel of Ministers met. It was also the place or hall where the Sultan dispensed justice.

We draw a series of Alicatados (cut ceramic) rosettes and look at the alternative centres and weaving techniques.
