Moti Masjid (Pearl Mosque) at Agra Fort in Agra, India during the british era. Vintage halftone circa late 19th century.

Join us for a two-part deep dive into the elegance and symbolism of Mughal architecture as we draw a classic three-arch Mughal colonnade, complete with cusped (foliated) arches and lotus-carved columns.

In Session One, we’ll focus on geometry and proportion — constructing a precise row of three arches using the same principles Mughal architects employed. You’ll discover how these arches, with their graceful multi-foil cusping, reflect a synthesis of Persian order, Islamic harmony, and Indian symbolic motifs. We’ll explore why certain arches use three lobes, nine foils, or ogee curves, and how symmetry shaped the Mughal vision of beauty.

In Session Two, we’ll bring the architecture to life. You’ll learn to render the intricate column capitals inspired by the lotus, a symbol of purity and transcendence across Indian and Persian traditions. Through careful shading and textural detail, we’ll capture the refined interplay of geometry and organic ornament that defined the imperial Mughal style — from the marble pavilions of Agra to the palace halls of Delhi and Lahore.

By the end of the workshop, you’ll have a richly detailed drawing of a Mughal colonnade that reflects both the architectural precision and the lyrical ornamentation that made this empire’s buildings masterpieces of world heritage.

All levels welcome — come draw, learn, and immerse yourself in the beauty of Mughal design.
