In Sept 2023 Art of Islamic Pattern will run a private five-day workshops in Fez, Morocco. Classes will take place in Dar Seffarine a superb 600-year-old courtyard house deep in the oldest part of the medina and covered with original splendid carved plaster, woodwork, zellij and zouaq (painted wood).
The study trip will include visits to some of the most remarkable architectural masterpieces in the Islamic world: the Bou Inania Madrasa (1356) and the Al-Attarine Madrasa (1331) and to other important hidden gems.
The course offers the opportunity to experience making geometric and biomorphic designs using traditional methods, on-site. There will also be a zellij (mosaic tiles) class at a local workshop in which participants produce their own unique pieces to take home with them.
Note: As with all our study trips, all teaching material will be based upon local sources: on this trip the madrasas of Fez. The content is different to our London courses.
This course can be taken in combination with the Marrakech study trip, which has completely different content, taking place the week after the Fez course – participants combining both trips will receive a 10% discount off the combined total fee.

For those interested in staying the main venue Dar Seffarine, which must be booked for the full six nights Arrival Sunday 17th Sept, course will run Monday 18th – Friday 22nd Sept. Checkout after breakfast on Saturday 23rd Sept or Sunday 24th if travelling on to Marrakech.
The options are as follows:-
- Room 1 ‘JOSEPHINE’ Single sex shared room 2 beds en-suite bathroom, £45 per person per night, £95 whole room.
- Room 2 ‘TUTTA’ Single sex shared room 2 beds, en-suite bathroom, £45 per person per night. £95 whole room.
- Room 3 Mezzanine triple room. Double bedroom and adjoining twin bedded room. Bath-room within suite and small balcony overlooking courtyard. £110 per night for whole suite. Available as single sex shared space: £60 per night if staying in the main room, £50 per person if sharing the twin bedded room.
- Room 4 ‘BLAINE’ Single sex shared room 2 beds, en-suite bathroom, £45 per bed, £95 whole room per night.

Marrakech
25th – 29th Sept 2023
The classes will take place in-between the fruit trees and fountains of the main courtyard at Riad Karmela, a beautiful traditional riad in the heart of the medina, a UNESCO world heritage site.
Each day we will recreate patterns from the breathtaking local monuments including the Ben Youssef Madrasa (14th century) the Bahia Palace (19th C), the Saadian Tombs (16th C) and other unique monuments. There will be a traditional zouaq class with a local craftsman.
Regarding accommodation at the course venue, see below:-
The course will take place in a beautiful traditional house called Riad Karmela which is situated in the heart of the medina. The Riad have reserved a limited number of rooms for us, both in the main Riad and their neighbouring Riads (all on the same street), all of which are of exceptionally high quality. Karmela has large well appointed suites available for 100 euros/night including breakfast.
Please email Riad Karmela directly to make your booking info@riadkarmela.com and mention you are part of the ‘Art of Islamic Pattern course’. You are not obliged to stay in Riad Karmela, but if you choose to to stay there IT IS ESSENTIAL that you book directly with them, not via a 3rd party agent, as this is a condition of our booking.
Participants should arrive by Sunday 24th of Sept and check out Saturday 30th September. You are of course free to extend your stay before or after the course.
Karmela, will send you a contract for you to sign. They will ask for credit card details and signature to secure the booking. The card will not be charged, except in the event of a NO SHOW. They will also send their bank details to make 50% deposit. This can be made up to a month before the course. The balance can be paid by transfer before arrival, or in cash or credit card on arrival. The latter will attract a transaction fee.
When participants have made the booking, please confirm with us that you have done so, just for our records.
