Uzbekistan 2027 – Art, Architecture & Craft Study Trip

Discover the Wonders of Uzbekistan: A Unique Journey Along the Ancient Silk Road

Programme – Online version

Samarkand, Bukhara & Khiva ~ 4th – 13th October 2027

Join Art of Islamic Pattern for a ten-day creative journey through the historic Silk Road cities of Uzbekistan, exploring the extraordinary architecture, geometric ornament and traditional craftsmanship of Central Asia.

This is much more than a sightseeing tour. Through a carefully balanced programme of architectural visits, drawing classes and hands-on craft workshops, we will explore the artistic traditions that have shaped these remarkable cities over centuries.

Our drawing sessions take inspiration directly from the buildings we visit. Using traditional compass-and-ruler techniques, we will investigate the geometric and biomorphic patterns found in magnificent tiled domes, carved wooden columns, historic madrasas and richly decorated interiors.

Along the way, we will visit local workshops and meet master craftspeople who continue to practise traditional skills, including woodcarving and ceramics.

The journey is designed for artists, designers, craftspeople and anyone with a curiosity about Islamic art and architecture. No previous drawing experience is necessary. Our teaching is carefully guided, allowing complete beginners and experienced artists alike to work at their own pace.

With small groups, characterful heritage accommodation and time to absorb the atmosphere of each city, the trip offers a personal and immersive experience of Uzbekistan’s artistic heritage.

Drawing from Architecture

Our drawing classes take inspiration directly from the monuments we explore. Using compass and ruler, we uncover the underlying geometry of intricate patterns found in tiled façades, carved plasterwork and architectural ornament. Drawing encourages us to slow down, observe carefully and develop a deeper understanding of these extraordinary buildings.

Traditional Crafts and Living Heritage

Throughout the journey, we meet local craftspeople who continue the artistic traditions of Uzbekistan. Through workshop visits and practical sessions in woodcarving, ceramics and other traditional techniques, we gain an appreciation of the skills, materials and knowledge passed down through generations.

A Personal and Immersive Journey

Our study trips bring together a welcoming community of people who share a curiosity about art, architecture and culture. Staying in characterful heritage hotels, drawing together in peaceful courtyards and beginning our mornings with gentle movement and meditation, we create space for learning, reflection and friendship alongside the excitement of exploring the Silk Road.
