Taught by Richard Henry, this introductory workshop is suitable for beginners, or those seeking to refresh their skills.
Patterns based upon 8-fold symmetry are found across the Islamic world and represent one of the three main families of symmetry in Islamic geometric art. This is the fourth of an ON-LINE series of workshops exploring 8-fold symmetry. There will be 5 ‘Exploring 8-Fold Symmetry’ sessions in total. In this workshop we explore the family of ‘Kite Chase’ chase patterns, often referred to as ‘Mafrooka’. We will consider their underlying proportions, in particular the Silver Ratio, and recreate the classic design (above) from the Nasrid Palaces of the Alhambra, amongst other related designs. Each participant will receive a video recording, and supporting material, including a PDF handout detailing the steps undertaken to re-create each pattern, so that students can re-create the design at home after the class. Although this can be taken as a stand-alone workshop, we will build upon themes introduced in earlier workshops in the Exploring 8-fold Symmetry Series, which can be downloaded from our archive. (Scroll through gallery in banner above to see images of historical 8-fold designs and former students’ work).
On-line Registration Fee: £10 – £15. Full Series: £45 – £70 of 5 workshops.
You will receive payment confirmation and within 48 hours before the start of the workshop, a link with joining instructions for the zoom workshop will be sent my email.
