Jeea Mirza ‘In the Courtyard of the Beloved’ (Detail) Watercolour on paper, based upon the mosaic floor in the Bayt El-Kredlea

Taught by Richard Henry, this ‘post-beginner’/intermediate workshop is suitable for those with some experience of constructing patterns with compass and straight edge. It is open to beginners, but if you are new to this discipline it would be advisable to start with earlier workshops in this series.

This is the fifth workshop of an ON-LINE series exploring 6 and 12-fold symmetry.

This week we will re-create the classic 12-fold rosette, which features as a cut-stone mosaic floor in the Bayt El-Kredlea in Cairo (images above and below) dating from the Ottoman period. We will discuss the historical occurrences of this pattern and the wider family of designs that it gives birth to. Each participant will receive a PDF handout detailing the steps undertaken to re-create the design, as well as access to a video recording of the session and additional supporting material. The course content will complement, but differ from our other ON-LINE courses. (Scroll through gallery in banner above to see images of historical instances of the patterns covered in this series, as well as former students’ work ).
