Previously taught live by Richard Henry from Feb – May 2021, this series focuses upon the geometry of Jaali Screens and lattices.
Found throughout the Islamic world, Jaalis and lattices are essential in the demarcation and articulation of architectural space. On a physical level, they moderate and modulate the passage of air and light and thus contribute to temperature, atmosphere and ambience. They also serve as a symbolic veil, shielding the exteriority of the temporal world from the interior world of the spirit. Composed of unique and dynamic symmetries they create stunning patterns of evanescent light cast upon the floors and walls of buildings.
In this 7 week course, we will re-create a number of classic screens, studying their underlying geometry and examining the extent to which they both confirm to and deviate from the traditional rules associated Islamic geometric patterns. For this course our main geographical focus will be the Indian sub-continent, where many of the most striking examples are found. Patterns taught will be new designs not previously taught on-line by Richard Henry.
NOTE: There is an additional ‘course review’ session, 90 minute open forum during which participants can share their completed work, offer feedback and reflect back upon the course.
This is a beginners–intermediate level course. We will start with some of the simpler designs and then move onto more complex patterns. Scroll through header images to see examples of patterns typical of those that will feature in the course.
Each session will be 2.5 hours long (although occasionally we will overrun slightly). A workshop video and additional supporting material (including PDF ebooklets with staged drawings and instructions) is available to download to ALL registrants.
On-line Registration Fee: Full Series £70.
The course will require you to download the free app Zoom
