Taught by Richard Henry, this Geometry Primer workshop is suitable for beginners, or those seeking to refresh their skills.
This is the fourth in a series of ON-LINE Geometry Primer workshops each Wednesday, introducing key geometric principles and ‘starter’ patterns. Each class length will be limited to 90 minutes in length. There will be 8 Primer sessions in total.
This week we will recreate the family of harmonic rectangles, or proportional modules, which underlie classical Islamic patterns as well as the ground plans and elevations of traditional Islamic buildings . We will look at the beautiful unfolding and interrelationship of these forms, the key numbers expressed as simple ratios, including the Golden Mean, and how they can be applied in the analysis and understanding of traditional designs. There will be a brief contextual slide show examining historical examples and applications. Although this can be taken as a stand-alone workshop, we will build upon themes introduced in earlier Geometry Primer workshops. (Scroll through gallery in banner above to see images of historical designs typical of the patterns that we will examine in this series and former students’ work).
