DAY 1
9th May 2025
Geometric Islamic Pattern
9.30am – 11:30pm €45
Using the traditional tools of compass and straight edge we will create a beautiful rosette.
Moroccan Patterns
1pm – 2:30pm €45
We will construct classical zelij geometric rosettes from Fez and Marrakech.
Persian Patterns
4 – 6pm €45
We will draw this famous radial pattern from The Jāmeh Mosque of Yazd.
DAY 2
10th May 2025
Moroccan stucco Patterns
9.30am – 11:30pm €45
Learn how to draw this biomorphic stucco 8 fold rosette from the Bou Inania Madrasa (1356) Fez Morocco.
Arabesque Patterns
1pm – 2:30pm €45
Create a beautiful 6 fold ‘Rumi/Islimi pattern’ from Kerman & learn about the ‘Rumi’ family of biomorphic motifs.
Geometric Persian Patterns
4 – 6pm €45
This session will focus on building patterns from medieval Persia and 5&10-fold symmetry.
DAY 3
10th May 2025
9.30am – 5:30pm €80
This is a special session focused on traditional tools and techniques.
Learn about the various traditional plaster carving techniques used in Islamic cultures.
At the end of the course, everyone will have a least one finished panel to take home with them.
Experience one of the most satisfying carving processes and complete a star pattern of your choice. This is a unique opportunity to experience plaster carving with a practicing sculptor in his studio. The patterns used for the intro exercises will focus on the geometric and biomorphic patterns and techniques of the Islamic lands but final projects can draw on a multitude of tradition designs.
Participants will practice relief & piercing carving techniques and receive an introduction to plaster casting and mold making.
