Stone Carving Workshop — Limestone
6–7 June 2026
This two-day workshop offers a practical introduction to the fundamentals of traditional stone carving, using Maltese limestone — a soft yet dense stone that is especially well suited to beginners while still rewarding for more experienced carvers. The course focuses on developing essential hand skills, tool knowledge, and an understanding of material behaviour.
Participants will be guided through the full carving process, from preparing the stone and transferring a design, to shaping, refining, and finishing a carved surface. Emphasis is placed on traditional techniques, safe tool use, and learning to read the structure and grain of the stone to achieve clean, confident cuts.

Students may choose from several carving approaches, including:
- Ornamental relief carving, focusing on decorative pattern and surface depth
- Architectural features, such as mouldings, profiles, or small structural elements
- The direct method, an improvised approach that encourages responsive, intuitive carving guided by the stone itself
Over the weekend, participants will complete a carved limestone piece of their chosen approach, developing both technical precision and a deeper appreciation for the craft traditions behind architectural and ornamental stonework.
All tools and materials are provided, and each participant will take home their finished carving.
Limited places.

Open to all abilities.
At the end of the course, everyone will have a least one finished panel to take home with them.
