NEW PATTERNS AND COURSE MATERIAL

This is a rare 3-day programme that includes 8 separate, but complementary 2-hour long classes. Participants are welcome to take one or all 6 sessions of the weekend sessions (Friday/Saturday). There is a 10% discount when signing up for all 6 weekend classes. On Sunday there is a practical day of plaster carving, which can be taken in addition to the weekend sessions, or as a stand-alone module.

Friday 8th November

Introducing Islamic Geometric Patterns. Suitable for beginners but also those seeking to refresh their knowledge, the patterns taught will be different to previous Dubai presentations. Using the traditional tools of compass and straight edge we will re-create a beautiful geometric pattern based on 6-fold symmetry.

Geometric Persian Patterns

Course Fee: 350AED
Open to all abilities.
12.30 – 2:30pm, Friday

In this session, we will explore some classic 5/10-fold geometric design from medieval Persia. Students will be introduced to the Golden Mean proportion and how to tesselate these designs.

Arabesque Persian Patterns

Course Fee: 350AED
Open to all abilities.
3.00 – 5pm, Friday

This session will focus on freehand motifs from medieval Persia. We will create a beautiful radial ‘Rumi Islimi pattern’ and learn about the traditional family of Persian biomorphic motifs.

Arabesque Moorish Patterns
Experience constructing compass and freehand arabesque patterns and gain a deeper understanding of the principles underlying a range of designs found within the such as the Morocco and Andalucia.

Geometry and Tessellation with Gold Leaf.

Course Fee: 350AED
Open to all abilities.
12.30 – 2:30pm, Saturday

This session will look at a classic Moroccan design based upon 8-fold symmetry. The basic design module will be incised into real gold leaf and then tessellated to make a larger composition. A new pattern, different from previous Dubai presentations, will be taught.

Geometric Mamluk Patterns

Course Fee: 350AED
Open to all abilities
3.00 – 5pm, Saturday

In this class we will re-create a classic geometric pattern from Medieval Cairo, explore how to expand the design into a larger composition.

Sunday 10th November

Plaster Carving

Course Fee: 700AED
Open to all abilities

10:30am to 3:30pm with 1 hour lunch

Experience one of the most satisfying carving processes and complete a pattern of your choice. This is a unique opportunity to experience plaster carving with a practising sculptor. There will be the opportunity to explore both geometric and biomorphic patterns.
