Traditional zouak panel from Fez, analysed within 1:√3 Rectangle

NOTE: This work shop was presented LIVE on 24th June. A video recording, together with slides, handouts and supporting material is available by registering on the right-hand panel. You will receive access to the material within 24 hours of registration.

Taught by Richard Henry, this Geometry Primer  workshop is suitable for beginners, or those seeking to refresh their skills.

This is the fourth in a series of ON-LINE Geometry Primer workshops each Wednesday, introducing key geometric principles and ‘starter’ patterns. Each class length will be limited to 90 minutes in length. There will be 8 Primer sessions in total. Participants can register for each session on a drop in basis, or alternatively register for the whole 8 workshop series for a discount and receive access to all upcoming Primer workshops, as well as access to video recordings of all previously presented sessions.

This week we will recreate the family of harmonic rectangles, or proportional modules, which underlie classical Islamic patterns as well as the ground plans and elevations of traditional Islamic buildings . We will look at the beautiful unfolding and interrelationship of these forms, the key numbers expressed as simple ratios, including the Golden Mean, and how they can be applied in the analysis and understanding of traditional designs. There will be a brief contextual slide show examining historical examples and applications. A workshop video and additional supporting material, including a PDF handout detailing the steps undertaken to re-create the design, will be available to download to ALL registrants after the workshop, whether they are able to attend the ‘live’ session or not. Although this can be taken as a stand-alone workshop, we will build upon themes introduced in earlier Geometry Primer workshops. (Scroll through gallery in banner above to see images of historical designs typical of the patterns that we will examine in this series and former students’ work ).

On-line Registration Fee: £8 – £12 per session. Full Series: £60 – £90.

You will receive payment confirmation and within 36 hours before the start of the workshop, a link with joining instructions for the zoom workshop will be sent my email.

Late Registration and Cut-Off: Anyone registering any later than 1:00 pm BST (GMT +1) on the day of the workshop, may be too late to receive the access codes in time to access the afternoon workshop. However everyone who registers will receive a link the recording and other supporting materials within 24 hours of the end of the workshop.

The course will require you to download the free app Zoom
