Depiction of Paradise on the elevation of the Umayyad Mosque, Damascus, completed 96AH/715AD

NOTE: This one-off series is being presented with our partner organisation Scripts’n’Scribes, who will handle all registration details. Register Now.

Taught by Richard Henry, this NEW SERIES will focus upon a series of  geometric Patterns from Damascus.

Damascus sits at the junction between east and west in the Islamic world and can be thought of as a gateway of transmission of designs from the east to the west. In this 4 week series we examine a representative selection of designs from the city, looking at such key sites as the Umayyad mosque and Azzem palace and exploring a broad range of historical designs. The class will be suitable for beginners, as well as those seeking to refresh their skills. Taught by Richard Henry, and drawing upon his 2001 research trip to the city, all patterns taught will be new designs not previously taught online before by Richard. All classes will be recorded and available for download after the live presentation for a limited period.

NOTE: There will be an additional ‘course review’ session on August 14th, a one hour open forum during which participants can share their completed work, offer feedback and reflect back upon the course.

This is a beginnersintermediate level course. We will start with some of the simpler designs and then move onto more complex patterns. Scroll through header images to see examples of patterns typical of those that will feature in the course.

Each session will be 2.5 hours long (although occasionally we will overrun slightly). All registrants will receive weekly invites to upcoming LIVE sessions, as well as time-limited access (3 months) to all video recordings of all previously presented sessions. A workshop video and additional supporting material (including PDF ebooklets with staged drawings and instructions) will be available to download to ALL registrants after each session, whether they are able to attend the ‘live’ session or not.

On-line Registration Fee (full series + review session): GBP £78 / $110 USD
