Introductory Weekend Workshop exploring 5 and 10-fold Symmetry.
Patterns based upon 5 and 10-fold symmetry are among the most beautiful and subtle found within Islamic art. We will look in particular at the stunning 10-fold rosette patterns, the use of the Golden Section in constructing these patterns and explore links between more recently discovered ‘Penrose’ tilings and medieval Persian ‘girih’ (knot) patterns.
We will explore traditional approaches to drawing these designs using proportional rectangles, as well as more recent ‘polygonal’ methods. There will be a rich contextual slide lecture, exploring the historical significance of these patterns and each student will receive a comprehensive series of PDF handouts detailing the steps undertaken to re-create each design. Taught by Richard Henry, this is an intensive weekend workshop, suitable for beginners, or those seeking to refresh their skills. The course content will complement, but differ from our “Geometry Intro: 6-Fold” & “Geometry Intro: 8-Fold” weekend courses.
