This 2-day festival will include 6 separate 2.5 hour long classes. Participants are welcome to take one or all 6 sessions.
Classes are organised in partnership with Islamic Art Revival Series and all classes will take part at the Creative Art Center. Discover how patterns of profound beauty and subtle complexity can be created from the simplest of means and develop practical skills in the arts and crafts of the Islamic world. In these unique skills based classes students use traditional methods to explore a range of classic Islamic designs from around the world and learn how to integrate freehand biomorphic motifs (Islimi/Arabesque) with geometric pattern.

Geometric Islamic Pattern
This is a general practical introduction to the principles of Islamic Pattern. Using the traditional tools of compass and straight edge we will re-create a beautiful geometric pattern. This session is open to both adults and children.
Arabesque Islamic Pattern
This is a general practical introduction to the fluid, versatile freehand biomorphic aspects of Islamic Pattern. The class will culminate with a classical Mamluk glide pattern. This session is open to both adults and children.
Islamic Pattern in 3D
Using paper and other materials students will experience how Islamic patterns relate to architecture and create a beautiful 3D artwork reminiscent of the famous muqarnas ceilings. This session is open to both adults and children.

Arabesque Moorish Patterns
Experience constructing compass and freehand arabesque patterns and gain a deeper understanding of the principles underlying a range of designs found within the such as the Morocco and Andalucia.
Geometric Persian Patterns
This session will focus on building patterns from medieval Persia, where Islamic art reached an extraordinary peak of perfection. We will look in particular at the stunning 5&10-fold symmetry.
Geometric Moorish Patterns
Experience constructing a classical geometric rosette from the Maghreb and gain a deeper understanding of the principles underlying a range of designs found within Nasrid Palaces of the Alhambra and the Marinid masterpieces such as the Bou Inania Madrasa.
