Participants who are new to Islamic Pattern can join either Introductory A, or Introductory B, or take both courses together.

Participants who have already completed an Art of Islamic Pattern Introductory course can enrol for the more advanced  Follow Course: Ceramic tiles.

Introduction Course A – Mornings
9.30am-12am, for 5 days, Sunday 15th – Thursday 19th October 2017

Introductory A 

This introductory module will cover 6-fold geometric patterns from across the Islamic world, together with elementary biomorphic patterns, with a focus upon the Rumi motif. There will be two short contextual slide lectures. The module culminates with practical element in which students have the opportunity to create of small piece of work in plaster using traditional tools.

Note: This course is open to anyone new to Islamic patterns. It can be taken together with Intro B, or taken as a stand alone module.

Introduction Course B – Evenings
6pm – 8.30pm, for 5 days, Sunday 15th – Thursday 19th October 2017

Introductory B 

This introductory module will cover 4-fold geometric patterns from across the Islamic world, together with elementary biomorphic patterns, with a focus upon the Moorish style. The module culminates with practical element in which students have the opportunity to incise geometric pattern onto 23 carat transfer gold and explore principles of tessellation.

Note: This course is open to anyone new to Islamic patterns. It can be taken together with with Intro A, or taken as a stand-alone module.

Follow-on Course:  Ceramic Tiles – Evenings
6pm – 8.30pm, Sunday 15th – Thursday 19th October 2017

New Follow-on Course: ‘Pigment, Pattern and Painting’.

This is an opportunity for students to create their own water colour set and use it to paint a geometric composition.

Learn how pigments are made from roots, berries and minerals and make your own set of water colours. Explore how pigments are sourced, precipitated and ground and how various binders are used to turned pigments into paint. The course will culminate with a colour theory session and class in geometric pattern painting.

Note: This is a more advanced module. Only participants who have already completed one, or ideally both, of the previous Art of Islamic Pattern Introductory workshops may join this module. The content is completely different to, but will complement the previous follow-on course Creative Design.
